Many in the region look to Singapore as having a model pragmatic HIV prevention and care programme. Though heavy handed, the regulation of sex work probably prevents transmission. Suppression of same sex sex and drug use is positively Victorian. Even the treatment programme is flawed. This is not much to praise. The junta leaders get safe blood transfusions there. more »

Most stories of infection are among sex workers and their customers, men who have sex with men, and often among people who inject drugs. Here is a reminder that one of the main modes of transmission of HIV in the country continues to be the use of nonsterile injecting equipment. Not sex and not blood transfusion and not tattooing. ... There is not a lot of good news about Myanmar in the UNAIDS annual update on the HIV pandemic. The country is mentioned several times, mostly to note high HIV prevalence among key populations at higher risk. But there is nothing about treatment in the report: the world leader in the response has chosen not to report on prevention and treatment in one consolidated annual report. Go figure. more »

This article is a week late. ... Phyu Phyu Tin says it is essential that aid reaches people who live in the countryside. Let's consider HIV. Most injecting drugs users shoot in urban areas. Female sex workers usually work in towns and cities. And the most active men who have sex with men have sex in the cities. So prevention activities must be primarily in cities.
